GiaQuinta: ADL says Senate Bill 198 does not get Indiana off the list of states without a hate crimes law

Indiana House Democratic Leader Phil GiaQuinta from Fort Wayne issued the following statement after Indiana Forward and the Anti-Defamation League issued a statement saying that passage of Senate Bill 198 will not get Indiana off the list of states without a hate crimes law:

“Based on a statement I saw today from Indiana Forward, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has confirmed that the hate crimes proposal from House Republicans would not move Indiana off the list of five states without a hate crimes law. Governor Holcomb has said repeatedly that it is a priority of his administration to move Indiana off of the ‘naughty list’ of states without a hate crimes law. I don’t see how the governor could sign this proposal into law if it passes the Indiana Senate next week. There is still time to move hate crimes legislation with a list of characteristics that includes gender, gender identity, age and ancestry through the committee process, and have it signed into law by Governor Holcomb before the end of this year’s legislative session.  I’d recommend that our Republican colleagues reverse course so that we can work together to pass a hate crimes bill into law that protects all Hoosiers.”
