Errington previews 2024 legislative focus

News & Media, Media Releases

State Rep. Sue Errington (D-Muncie) is excited to offer Hoosiers a preview of her legislative goals for the 2024 legislative session. This year, Errington's legislative priorities range from promoting wage range transparency to implementing ballot measures in Indiana.

Following the example of the Ohio general election this November, Errington will promote legislation for citizen-led ballot measures to be enshrined in the Indiana Constitution. This would allow Hoosiers to collect signatures on issues and have them placed on the ballot. When lawmakers are out of step with what the public wants, they need to know they have a voice.

“During the Ohio general election, the nation saw firsthand the impact ballot initiatives have on voting outcomes. I believe that if given the opportunity, Hoosiers would vote positively on issues surrounding cannabis legalization and abortion. Just like voters in Ohio, Hoosiers deserve a fair opportunity to make their voices heard at the polls,” Errington said.

Errington also intends to push for wage range transparency and eliminating discussions of wage history in the workplace.

“Hoosiers deserve fair and equal pay in the workplace. To achieve this, the wage range for a position should be required in a posting and the interview process. Additionally, to prohibit employers from underpaying their employees, we must also remove an applicant's salary history from the hiring process. Additionally, the bill would eliminate the salary history discussion from the application and interview process that so often perpetuates discriminatory wages from past employment. Implementing these changes would help narrow the gender pay gap and ensure equal salaries for minority groups, ultimately creating a broader, diverse workforce.”

Finally, Errington wants to highlight issues surrounding health and safety. This session she will emphasize the lack of accurate sexual education programs and the rising number of gun incidents across the state.

“Both of these issues directly affect the health and well-being of Hoosiers, especially those in vulnerable populations such as children and teens. I want to ensure Indiana is promoting policies that thoroughly and accurately combat these issues.”

“Our legislature has an obligation to protect Hoosiers and positively impact the quality of their everyday lives. I believe by tackling these topics, we will be on track to creating a stronger, healthier state.”
