Errington announces interim committee assignments, laments exclusion of environmental affairs committee
INDIANAPOLIS – Today, State Rep. Sue Errington (D-Muncie) announced that she has been selected to serve on four interim study committees in preparation for the 2025 Legislative Session. Interim study committees allow lawmakers to conduct hearings, research specific areas of concern and develop legislation on these important topics.
Errington will serve on the following: Compliance Advisory Panel; Indiana Recycling Market Development Board; Environmental Affairs Committee; and the Interim Study Committee on Elections.
In May, the Indiana Legislative Council announced the study committee topics, which failed to include the Environmental Affairs committee. The committee has not met since 2020.
“For years, Republicans have shut down productive discussion of environmental issues. Indiana is currently designated as one of the worst states in terms of air quality and water pollution. Yet, this past session, legislators continued to strip away environmental protections, targeting Indiana's wetlands. The health of our environment affects the well-being of all Hoosiers. Considering this, it is absurd that environmental affairs continue to be ignored by our Republican-led legislature.
“The lack of credence given to environmental welfare is disheartening. I am disappointed that the environmental affairs committee has been tossed aside again. Though the Environmental Affairs Committee will not meet this interim, I will continue working on the Recycling Market Board and the Compliance Advisory Panel to promote clean air and recycling initiatives.
“As we begin to work this interim, I encourage the Indiana Legislative Council to acknowledge the importance of this issue and ensure that the environmental study committee is given a place in the spotlight next interim.”
