DeLaney statement on CDC’s eviction moratorium extension
INDIANAPOLIS – State Representative Ed DeLaney (D-Indianapolis) today applauded the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention decision to extend the eviction moratorium through the month of July. DeLaney and other members of the Indiana House Democratic Caucus hosted a forum this past week with state and local experts to gather information on the pending eviction crisis.
Pre-pandemic, the City of Indianapolis had the second highest number of court-ordered evictions in the nation behind New York City. At the forum, it became clear to lawmakers that the State of Indiana is not yet equipped to deal with the fallout of a lifted moratorium.
“The Biden administration has given Indiana leaders an additional month to get in front of this pending housing and eviction crisis,” DeLaney said.
“State and local leaders painted a disturbing picture at our forum this week predicting consequences that will affect the most vulnerable Hoosiers for years. I am imploring Governor Holcomb to give this issue his full attention. There are hundreds of millions of federal dollars available to protect our tenants and landlords. We need to take advantage of this. The State of Indiana should facilitate a massive information campaign for tenants and landlords. We need to play catch-up and start managing the eviction and foreclosure crisis already under way.”
