Campbell congratulates Nobel Prize winner who’s a former West Lafayette High School graduate
On Wednesday, Moungi G. Bawendi was one of three people awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Dr. Bawendi developed a way to chemically produce quantum dots, also known as semiconductor nanocrystals. Quantum dots can be used for colors in LED lights, to increase the resolution of computer screens and as an organic dye in biomedical science– useful for cancer cell imaging. The laureate graduated from West Lafayette Junior-Senior-High School in 1978. State Rep. Chris Campbell (D-West Lafayette) released the following celebratory statement:
“I’d like to congratulate Dr. Moungi Bawendi on winning the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. His discovery will change the worlds of technology and medicine. Since these quantum dots emit color and light, they're a useful tool to map biological tissue. His discovery will ensure individuals across the globe get the best medical treatment possible.
“Dr. Bawendi is part of our community and everyone in West Lafayette is incredibly proud of him. He’s made a significant impact here, and is still well remembered by his former chemistry teacher, Jim Guy. This is an incredible triumph for Dr. Bawendi, our community and West Lafayette High School. It’s inspiring to see someone from West Lafayette make a huge difference in the world.”
