INDIANAPOLIS – State Rep. Sue Errington (D-Muncie) said the Indiana State Budget Committee approved $40 million for the renovation of Ball State University’s Schmidt/Wilson Residence Hall. The approval came during the committee’s meeting at the Statehouse today (June 12).

“These improvements will make the building more energy efficient and transform the living space for students into rooms that are much more comfortable,” said Errington. “The project includes replacement of windows, the roof, and masonry on the outside while there will be new electrical and mechanical systems as well as new lighting and plumbing on the inside.

“The living arrangements for students will be superior to what they are now,” continued Errington. “The bathrooms will have more privacy and there will kitchenettes, student and social lounges, and meeting rooms. The updated space will meet the needs of students while providing physical improvements to the building. I appreciate the State Budget Committee’s cooperation with Ball State in providing the best possible experience for the university’s students.”

The State Budget Committee approved the expenditure of $40,100,000 for the project.

Students pursuing majors in theatre and dance will have the opportunity to participate in the Theatre and Dance Living-Learning Community that will be relocated to Schmidt/Wilson when it reopens.

The building is named for two, former Ball State professors: Fred J. Schmidt and Angie Wilson. Schmidt was a professor and head of the Industrial Arts Department from 1935-58. Wilson was an associate professor of social science, who taught English, at Burris School from 1932-54.
