Bauer statement on decision of Indiana Supreme Court to uphold near-total abortion ban
Please attribute the following statement to State Rep. Maureen Bauer (D-South Bend) after today's Indiana Supreme Court decision to uphold Indiana's near-total abortion ban: “The ruling from Indiana’s Supreme Court today allows the GOP near-total abortion ban to now go into effect, undoing decades of progress for the rights of women. As we heard through the hours of testimony last summer, abortion is necessary, medical health care. This policy strips women and girls of their fundamental right to bodily autonomy.
“To all the women and girls who are left feeling afraid and helpless after today's ruling: My fellow House Democrats and I will continue to work to restore your right as an Indiana resident to have power over your own health and future.”
The case now returns to County Court for possible further action. The ability to bring future cases remains, as the court continues to hear a second case, on whether SB1 violates the Religious Freedom Restoration Act.
