Bauer: IUSM-SB / Notre Dame research facility to receive $4 million for expansion
INDIANAPOLIS – State Rep. B. Patrick Bauer (D-South Bend) announced today that the State Budget Committee has approved a $4 million project that will expand cancer research on the campus of Indiana University School of Medicine-South Bend (IUSM-SB).
The project includes renovation of Harper Hall on the IUSM-SB campus. Built in 2011, Harper Hall is home to the Mike and Josie Harper Cancer Research Institute, which is shared by IU School of Medicine-South Bend and the University of Notre Dame. The facility enables scientists from both institutions to collaborate on research in cancer biology, with an emphasis on such areas as genomics and proteomics, and breast, prostate and colon cancers.
“The project will allow for expansion of medical research activities by students and faculty,” Bauer said. “Currently, the space that will be renovated for this project is unused.
“Expanding the cancer research facility in Harper Hall will give students and faculty an opportunity to take their cancer research to the next level,” he continued. “The cure could be within reach if advances like this continue to occur.”
Work on the project is scheduled to begin this November, with the new space expected to be occupied by June 2020.
