State Rep. B. Patrick Bauer
State Representative B. Patrick Bauer previously served as Speaker of the House through six sessions of the Indiana State Legislature. He has also served as the Indiana House Democratic Leader, chair of the Ways and Means Committee, and as both chair and vice chair of the Indiana State Budget Committee.
Currently, Bauer is the ranking minority member of the Judiciary Committee. He is also a member of the Environmental Affairs and Insurance committees.
During his legislative service, Bauer has gained recognition as one of the leading fiscal experts in Indiana state government. In his position as chair of the Ways and Means Committee, Bauer played an influential role in the creation and passage of the biennial budget that funds most state operations.
Bauer worked for South Bend Community Schools for 33 years, where he spent 17 years as a teacher and 16 years as an administrator. He moved on to serve as Vice President of External Partnerships at Ivy Tech Community College before retiring. Bauer also is a member of the Advisory Board for Indiana University South Bend and is a member of the Independent College Board. He also serves on the board of the Urban Enterprise Association of South Bend, Inc.
During his tenure in the Indiana House of Representatives, Bauer has received dozens of state and national awards for legislative excellence.
Bauer and his wife, Karen, have three adult children and four grandchildren.
He is an avid reader and enjoys walking, swimming, and spending time with his family.
Rep. B. Patrick Bauer was instrumental in the passage of a felony arrest DNA sampling law in Indiana in 2017. Bauer is also responsible for a law banning the sale or production of cosmetic and other household products containing plastic microbeads. High levels of microbeads have been found in the Great Lakes Basin, as well as many bodies of water in the United States.
