Smith: Back-to-School Jamboree set for September 14 at IU Northwest
State Rep. Vernon G. Smith (D-Gary) announced today that the annual free Back-to-School Jamboree is scheduled for Saturday, September 14, on the campus of Indiana University Northwest, 3400 Broadway.
Highlights of the event—which will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. September 14 at the Savannah Hall Gymnasium/Auditorium on the IU Northwest campus—include a three-on-three basketball tournament, a film festival, and both a dance contest and a double-Dutch jump rope competition.
“The Jamboree offers the community a way to welcome students back to school,” Smith said. “We have activities planned for students of every age, ranging from finger and face painting and a drawing contest for the younger children, to basketball and video game tournaments and jump rope and dance contests for older students. In addition, the first 300 children will receive free school supplies.
”Not only does this event offer area children a fun way to get ready for the school year, it also helps their families become aware of the services and resources available in our community,” he added.
The basketball tournament, one of the mainstays for the Jamboree, will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Savannah Hall Gymnasium. This event does include a $30 registration fee to ensure a position on the tournament schedule. Application forms can be obtained by visiting the Beautiful Things store at 3570 Village Court in Gary or by calling Smith at 219-887-2046.
The film festival is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. inside Savannah Hall Auditorium. Dancing will be from noon to 4 p.m., with a DJ providing the music.
Area agencies will have exhibit booths and pass out information detailing what the organizations offer students. Booths will be available for rental to groups that offer youth services or have products to sell. For additional information, contact Smith at 219-887-2046.
The Jamboree is sponsored by Smith; the African-American Achievers Youth Corps, Inc.; the IU Dons, Inc.; Indiana University Northwest; Haywood and Flemings Associates Insurance Agency; the Gary Crusader; the Gary 411 News; Geminus Corporation; Fresh County Market; Familia Dental; MetroPCS; Lil Lou’s Beauty and Barber College; ArcelorMittal; BP Amoco; Majestic Star Hotel and Casino; U.S. Steel; and the Gary Literacy Foundation.
