Local Back-to-School Jamboree at IU Northwest scheduled for Sat., Sept. 8, says State Rep. Vernon G. Smith

INDIANAPOLIS – State Rep. Vernon G. Smith (D-Gary) said the Back-to-School Jamboree will be from 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 8 on the Indiana University Northwest (IU Northwest) campus.

“The Back-to-School Jamboree popularity is truly gratifying,” said Dr. Smith, an education professor at IU Northwest.

“The Jamboree is the community’s way of welcoming students back to school, where a world of adventure, through learning, awaits young people, our country’s future. It is through education that a young person discovers the mysteries of science, witnesses history through books, learns to speak with people from other countries, and acquires the skills and knowledge to be successful throughout their lifetimes.

“Former South African President Nelson Mandela said, ‘Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world,’” quoted Dr. Smith.

“Education has the power to change the world, our country, the state, our community, and, most importantly, ourselves. Even though education is hard work, it can be fun. When young people make this realization, they find the key to open a treasure trove of opportunities for themselves.”

Dr. Smith said the Back-to-School Jamboree will feature activities for students of every age, including the ever popular three-on-three basketball tournament. The contest is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. in Savannah Hall Gymnasium on the IU Northwest campus. Dr. Smith urged teams to register early to ensure a position on the tournament schedule. The early registration fee is still only $30. Application forms can be obtained by visiting the Beautiful Things store at 3570 Village Court in Gary or by calling Dr. Smith at 887-2046.

The film festival is scheduled from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. inside Savannah Hall Auditorium. Dancing will be from noon – 4 p.m. with a DJ providing the music. In addition, there will be a double-Dutch jump-rope competition, a video game tournament, and a dance contest.

Finger painting, a drawing contest, and face painting will be offered for the younger children.

Area agencies will have exhibit booths and pass out information about what those organizations offer students. Booths will be available for rental to groups that offer youth services or have products to sell. Dr. Smith may be contacted at 887-2046 for additional information about booth rentals.
