GiaQuinta: School safety is a legislative priority for House Democrats
Indiana House Democratic Leader Phil GiaQuinta (D-Fort Wayne) today issued the following statement after a school protection officer prevented a student from entering Muncie Central High School with a gun on Wednesday, August 7:
“An officer assigned to protect students, teachers and staff at a Muncie school played a key role in preventing what could have been another tragic headline on the heels of mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton, by simply doing what he was specifically trained to do: protect the students and faculty in the school building. As a result, everyone was safe from harm.
“It is important to note that not every school in Indiana has a school protection officer.
“School safety demands the state legislature’s immediate attention. House Democrats will make it a priority to focus on ways to increase investments in both school protection officers and mental health services in our schools during the 2020 legislative session of the Indiana General Assembly. We have to do more to ensure our children are safe to learn in their classroom.”
