Errington denounces Republican plan to ban safe abortions

INDIANAPOLIS – State Rep. Sue Errington (D-Muncie) issued the following statement after Statehouse Republicans announced their intent to file Texas-style abortion ban legislation during the 2022 Legislative Session:

“There is no such thing as a true abortion ban. There can only be a ban on safe abortions. Indiana shamefully holds the title for third highest maternal mortality rate in the nation and we will only sink lower if we force women out of the safety of a licensed medical clinic and into the shadows of a back alley for their abortion. Hoosiers deserve better. They deserve lawmakers who strive for better.

“49% of pregnancies are unintended, the result of a lack of comprehensive sex education and accessible contraception. We should be using our resources to provide evidence-based pregnancy prevention practices to Hoosiers instead of putting a $10,000 bounty on those who assist a woman in accessing an abortion. If my colleagues across the aisle truly want to prevent abortions, I urge them to empower Hoosier men and women through statewide, comprehensive sex education and equal access to effective contraception.”
