Bauer statement on statewide eviction crisis
INDIANAPOLIS – As of last Thursday, 68 eviction notices had been filed in St. Joseph County courts since Aug. 1. State Rep. Maureen Bauer (D-South Bend) offered the following comment:
“Hoosier tenants, particularly those in areas like South Bend, have been facing an eviction crisis well before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic is not over. With the Delta variant spreading rapidly, the same low-income communities most affected by the virus now face homelessness. Failing to protect our renters would needlessly risk escalating our public health crisis. Families need a roof over their heads. Employers need employees in stable housing.
“The State of Indiana needs to address our most vulnerable with dignity. I look forward to working with my colleagues to ensure protections in the future.”
