INDIANAPOLIS – State Rep. Shelli VanDenburgh (D-Crown Point) said the State Budget Committee met in Fort Wayne today (Aug. 14) and gave its approval for Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana to lease the Purdue Academic Learning Center, located at 9900 Connecticut Dr. in Crown Point, near the Merrillville town border.
This expansion of Ivy Tech’s Gary Campus will allow the Health Care Division, which includes nursing, physical therapy, respiratory care, and health-related studies, to relocate into a larger space for its associate degree programs. Additional space will be available for other general education purposes, like science labs, as well as space for the Corporate College and the Society of Innovators. Cost of the lease is $602,356 per year with an option to purchase the 48,720-square-foot, two-story building from the Purdue Research Foundation.
“This is a state-of-the-art facility,” said VanDenburgh. “The $9.1 million building opened in 2005 and still offers a lot of potential. Due to declining enrollment, Purdue University Calumet had to close the center. It is important for the community to have this facility utilized. In particular, we are excited to have advanced educational opportunities conveniently offered again to the residents of south Lake County.”
This will be Ivy Tech’s first facility in the southern portion of Lake County. Community and Methodist hospitals as well as the Community Hospital MRI Center are located within a few miles of the future Ivy Tech site.
