INDIANAPOLIS – State Rep. Linda Lawson (D-Hammond), Lake County Community Corrections Director Kellie Bittorf, and the City of Refuge Christian Church will host a shower on Saturday (March 18) to benefit Emma’s House, a new shelter in Gary that will offer services to single homeless women in Lake County.
The shower is scheduled to run from noon to 4 p.m. local time in the Lake Room of the Genesis Center, One Genesis Center Plaza, Gary.
“Emma’s House, which is located at 616 Maryland in Gary, is scheduled to open in May,” Lawson said. “It is designed to provide space and resources for as many as 12 single homeless women to help them get back on their feet. Shelter staff also will provide resources for education, employment, health, and housing as these women transition out of homelessness.”
From the beginning, the project has drawn an unprecedented amount of support from the community. The house itself was donated by a member of the City of Refuge Church in Merrillville.
“This project already has gained a number of significant partners, including Lake County Community Corrections, the Northwest Indiana Urban League, SIBIS Counseling, the Awakening Counseling Center, Goodwill Industries, and Work One,” Lawson noted. “Through events like the shower scheduled for Saturday, we are hoping to gain the funding needed to complete work such as insulation, dry wall, floors, doors, and cabinets, as well as purchase household goods and appliances.”
