STATEHOUSE - Below is a statement from State Rep. Robin Shackleford, State Sen. Jean Breaux and City-County Councilman William “Duke” Oliver concerning the tragic death of IMPD Officer Perry Renn:
One of Indianapolis’ true heroes fell this weekend. He was gunned down in an Eastside alley. IMPD Officer Perry Renn patrolled neighborhoods in our districts, dangerous neighborhoods where good people live in fear of violence. Also on Saturday, seven people were shot in Broad Ripple. The death toll in Indianapolis is 73 and rises weekly. At this alarming rate, the city may set a new record for homicides this year.
We, as concerned citizens, must actively work together to end the tragedy of violence and death. The effort must go far beyond rhetoric and be realized with adequate resources and commitment. That dedication must come from city and state leaders and, yes, from each and every citizen.
Our hearts and prayers go out to the Renn family. While nothing can relieve the loss they feel, may God heal their pain and suffering. Let all of us in the community express our deepest sympathy and appreciation for this man’s greatest of all sacrifices for the safety of others. “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”—John 15:13.
In Matthew 5:9, Jesus gave the Sermon on the Mount offering the seventh Beatitude: “Blessed are the peacemakers for they will be called the children of God.”
And so Officer Perry Renn will be known for eternity, among the heavenly host, as a peacemaker and a child of God.
