INDIANAPOLIS - Indiana State Rep. Vernon G. Smith (D-Gary) has been appointed by Speaker Brian Bosma (R-Indianapolis) to the National Conference of State Legislators (NCSL) Education Committee.
The NCSL Education Committee is concerned with issues such as early childhood education, K-12 reform efforts, higher education, the federal No Child Left Behind Act, the Higher Education Act, school violence, special education, teachers, school finance, and adequacy.
Smith currently serves as the ranking Democrat on the House Education Committee.
“I am grateful to earn this appointment,” Smith said. “Education issues directly affect our children and our nation’s future. The decisions we make as legislators make a great impact, so it is important to share ideas not only at the local level, but at the national level as well.
“My goal is to participate fully in discussions,” he added. “We can learn valuable lessons from others around the country, and they can learn valuable lessons from us.”
