INDIANAPOLIS - State Rep. Charlie Brown (D-Gary) led the Indiana General Assembly this week in honoring outgoing Ivy Tech Community College Chancellor J. Guadalupe Valtierra with a House Concurrent Resolution.
Valtierra was honored upon his retirement from Ivy Tech, where Brown said he was a dedicated administrator, public servant and voice for higher education.
A true Hoosier, Valtierra was born in Gary, Indiana, earned a bachelor’s degree from Purdue University, and a Juris Doctorate and a master’s degree from Indiana University. He served the students of Indiana University-Bloomington and Purdue University-Calumet before being appointed Director of Student Affairs at Ivy Tech Community College.
He was then appointed the Chancellor appointed the Chancellor for Ivy Tech Community College Northwest, which includes the Gary, East Chicago, Valparaiso, and Michigan City campuses.
During his tenure, enrollment at Ivy Tech’s Northwestern Region grew by more than 70 percent. He also oversaw multiple successful capital campaigns and the completion of a new Ivy Tech campus in Valparaiso.
“Valtierra was an invaluable asset to higher education in Indiana,” said Brown. “He frequently was called upon for his leadership and professional expertise to help lead state and national educational conferences, including the Council for Opportunity in Education in Washington, D.C.”
While Brown authored the resolution, nearly the entire General Assembly signed as coauthors, proving Valtierra’s appreciated commitment to education and the state of Indiana.
